Original Word: ר֫וּחַ – Part of Speech: Noun Feminine
Transliteration: ruach – Phonetic Spelling: (roo’-akh) – Short Definition: spirit

When I study any book in the Bible, I usually review relevant aspects including words. In Ecclesiastes, Ruach is essential to the text. In looking at the occurrences of Ruach – ר֫וּח – through the Tanak, Old Testament, I have made seven groups of meaning.

Emptiness like Grasping Wind Spitit of Human Life Breath  Human Heart/Emotion
Evil Spirit from the Lord God’s Wind Spirit of God
Spirit of Wisdom, Counsel, Understanding, Judgement

Below are the occurences of ruach through the Bible. Here I start with Ecclesiastes. From Ecclisiastes I list occurences in similar books, then the prophets, Psalms, and ending with the remaming occurences.

In Eccliesiastes ruach usually takes the meaning of grasping at air, pursuing uselessness. The next most occuring meaning is natural wind followed by ruach as human breath and human emotions of the heart.

These are the lists I put together for my study. In color coding the occurences of ruach through the Bible, a visual representation of the occurences of ruach can be considered. This benefits the survey by identifying how various authors have used ruach as well as its frequancy.

As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is vanity. 20 All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust. 21 Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth? 22 I have seen that nothing is better than that man should be happy in his activities, for that is his lot. For who will bring him to see what will occur after him?
