In Did Jesus Claim to be God, I said that I would post some of the verses I collected in putting that post together. This post will have the verses which Jesus Claims to be God. There will be other post with verses related to “I Am” where Jesus  claims a) to be the Son of God,  and  b) places others call Him God and were not corrected.

In John 14:9 Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father. Jesus declares the anyone who has seen Him has seen the Father. He lets them know it is the Father dwelling in Him. For me, This is a claim to be God

8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus replied,“Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I Am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, carrying out His work

In Matthew 28:20, often referred to as the Great Commission, Jesus equates Himself not only God the Father but with God the Holy Spirit as well. In Matthew 12:28 Jesus said that the Holy Spirit was working in Him. In the last verse Jesus says the Spirit of the Father is at work in Him. In commissioning His disciples, He commanded them to baptize new disciples “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. Jesus places Himself between God the Holy Spirit and God the Father.

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

In John 17:10-11  Jesus claims to be God a few ways. First is the name, ” protect them by Your name, the name You gave Me. Second is shared possessions, “all You have is Mine”. Finally there is a shared oneness, “we are one.”

10 All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine; and in them I have been glorified. 11 I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by Your name, the name You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one.

When guards came to get Jesus, to crucify Him we see strength when Jesus says, “I Am He”. This “I Am He” is the same ἐγώ εἰμι as we have throughout the Septuagint as well as the New Testament. When Jesus responds to the guards with “I AM (He)” the guards fall to the ground.

John 18:5 and John 18:6 4 Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Who are you looking for?” 5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them. 6 When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

“I will die for your sins.” This is the good new. Jesus claims that while we are from this world, He was not from this world.

23 Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this  world; I am not of this world.  24 That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” John 8:2324

In John 8:58 Jesus is quoted as saying, “before Abraham was born, I Am!”. This has two points that draw my attention. The first is Jesus claiming to existing before Abraham. And then again we have the statement “I Am.”  Greek has a tense component to verbs. As with all of the examples in this group, “I Am” used in the present tense. Since Jesus has used the past tense in other places where the structure indicates that tense. Using the present tense here draws my attention.

57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 “Truly, truly, I tell you, Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus hid Himself and slipped away from the temple area.

The Almighty is strongly related to God in both the Old and New Testaments. The Almighty, ὁ Παντοκράτωρ, means ruler of all, or ruler of the universe. This is a God statement. My examples have primarily been statements from the Gospel, specifically out of the mouth of Jesus. Here I include a few verses from The Revelation of Jesus Christ. The reason I am including these verses is that they are quotes from the mouth of Jesus, therefore Jesus claiming to be God.

7 Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him—even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen.  8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and was and is to come — the Almighty.” Revelation 1:17

At one place John falls to the ground when he is approached by an angel. The angel immediately tells John to rise, as he is only an angel. When John sees Jesus in Revelation 1 he falls down before Him. Instead of being told to rise the Angel of the Lord places His hand on John and comforts Him by saying, “do not be afraid”

16 He held in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp double-edged sword came from His mouth. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest. 17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. But He placed His right hand on me and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last, 18 the Living One. I was dead, and behold, now I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of Death and of Hades

In Revelation 21:6 the one who sits on the throne claims to be the Alpha and Omega. This is how Jesus referred to Himself in the last verse. Then in verse 7 Jesus directly claims to be God, ” I will be his God.”

5 And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.” 6 And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life. 7The one who is victorious will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son.

Mark 14:6461 But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.” 63 Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What is your” verdict? And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.
